Always willing to help those in need." - Lord Seeker Lambert

A compassionate man by nature, Rhys is hardly one to overlook a person in need. He often overlooks his own safety when another is in trouble, which is evident throughout Dragon Age: Asunder. Even before the book begins, Rhys goes out of his way to visit, learn about, and find a way to help Cole, a young man invisible to everyone but him. When he's unable to help, or conflicted, he feels a certain amount of guilt; he wants, genuinely, to help people, and when faced with the knowledge that he simply can't, it's hard on him.

This trait lends itself well to his ability to sacrifice himself, his freedom, and his safety for the people he cares about. He acts, not without thinking, but with careful consideration of what he wants, and believes in. He would rather die, especially nearing the end of the book, than risk someone's life, especially the people he views as his close friends (and family). In fact, he even blocks the seekers and templars just long enough for Wynne, his mother, and Evangeline to escape into the sewers, knowing full well that he would likely die doing so.

A great many of his decisions are fueled by this sense of compassion, even if, at times, they're not the most logical or safe choice. He gave no thought before saving Evangeline's life in Adamant, despite the fact that she was under orders to kill them and that doing so could very well get him killed or injured himself. He tends to give in to helping others, but, at times, can be conflicted, like with many of his interactions with Cole. He's more sympathetic to those who can't help themselves, to those who need it, than not, but, for the most part, Rhys is willing to help any man not inherently cruel.

Not only compassionate, Rhys is also blessed with the ability to be surprisingly charming. He's warm, and kind, and those traits, combined with previously mentioned compassion, is one of the primary reasons he's so well liked within the White Spire. Early on in the book, Rhys is imprisoned, but many of the mages, along with the help of outspoken Adrian, were willing to jump to his defense and speak out against his imprisonment.

He can make friends easily with such an attitude, but the book makes little mention of how many he has within the Circle. In all likelihood, he probably had more than a handful of friends, but not anyone of note or importance, or anyone he would likely confide in.

Rhys has, as well, a wealth of wit and sarcasm at his disposal, and he makes us of it often. He'll often crack jokes, or quips, even in less ideal circumstances. The moment he proceeds downstairs at Adamant, and notices the blood, Rhys comments that they "really know how to decorate", and that the White Spire should consider a similar theme. It should be noted that it wasn't said to be cruel, or thoughtless, but rather ease his own tension and nerves.

And that's what a vast majority of his jokes seem to do, at least in the more inappropriate situations: ease his nerves. It's almost a knee jerk reaction; a way to help himself, and perhaps even others, through dark, or helpless situations.

Born a mage, Rhys is intimately familiar with a lack of freedom. He grew up in a world where he was constantly scrutinized, and under watch, with never a real moment of privacy, and thus he's developed a habit of secrecy. He takes moments of privacy when he can, where he can, and is prone to wandering (read: sneaking) off without informing traveling companions. This leads to tensions, half-lies, and occasionally life threatening situations, but even then he finds a way to joke about it, even when scrutinized and questioned.

Rhys may have strong opinions on the state of mages, and the current mage rebellion, but he attempts his hardest at being understanding, and looking at things with an open mind--and not just in regards to the subjects of mages, but spirits, demons, and The Fade itself. For all that he states he isn't a scholar, he has a surprisingly scholarly outlook, knowing that his understanding of their world is dim at best. He can easily come to understand another perspective, but that doesn't mean he will always come to agree with it.

His ability to be understanding can occasionally leave him conflicted, however. A good reference would be his opinions on Cole. He would often find himself wavering on his belief in Cole if only because he could understand why others would be hesitant about him, especially due to the mysteries surrounding the young man. It should be noted that the majority of those mysteries are solved, and Rhys has a complete understanding that Cole wasn't a human, but rather a spirit. Rhys has always been more open minded than most, but this revelation, while heart breaking, solidified his knowledge that he truly knew little about the world they lived in.

Rhys, for all of his ability to be understanding, has a short fuse when it comes to his temper. Not everything lights the spark, but certain subjects tend to linger closer than others, with his primary triggers generally involving mage abuse. When his temper sparks, he has a tendency to speak out, loudly, but often without considering the possible consequences. Even when angered, however, Rhys has a certain way with words--not so much as to miraculously convince people he's right, but rather he's just good at getting his point across.

Now, while he tends to speak without thinking, Rhys is also capable of refraining, at least until he's prodded further. He knows which battles to pick, and which ones are best left for another day. But, even then, outbursts happen, especially if the subject hits too close to home, or its treated with disrespect. A good chunk of these triggers focus primarily on mages, and the way they're viewed in society. He won't always lash out, or even speak out, but he's more likely to if a nerve is touched.

There's a certain defiance to Rhys that pairs dangerously with his temper. It appears, generally, when he's pressed into a corner, either verbally or physically. He becomes defensive, and occasionally combative when these events come into play, leading him down a dangerous path. At moments like that, Rhys' thoughts become all about proving whomever wrong, even if it leads to his imprisonment, or worse. He isn't inclined to give in too easily, at least until pressed.

When it comes to relationships, Rhys has a few truly close ones, and they evolved over the course of the book. By the end, the most important people in his life were Evangeline, Wynne, and Cole, shifting from just Cole and Adrian. Upon the loss of both Evangeline and Cole, Rhys was devastated; Cole's acceptance of what he was, and fading away sapped what little willpower Rhys had had left, and Evangeline's death broke his heart as he realized just how much he cared for her. Those losses left him utterly hopeless, as if he'd lost pieces of himself. It's Wynne's death that ultimately changes his whole view on how he felt about her; for most of the book, he felt as if she was trying to use him like Adrian, that she wasn't the same woman she'd been when they'd first met, but her death, that compassion and love, showed him that that woman was still there.

He'll always regret that he hadn't told her more, hadn't thanked her, and he'll always dream about what type of future they could have had if he was raised with her, but he doesn't dwell too much on it. His mother is gone, a woman he barely knew, but somehow knew long enough to know she loved him in her own. Wynne didn't hold the same type of relationship status as Cole, or Evangeline, but it didn't take away her importance to him. She changed him, his opinions on the Circle, and that's the primary reason he accepts the offer to be the Aequitarian Representative, despite not feeling worthy to live up to her.

For all that he's been through, Rhys is an understanding, and far more open-minded man than he was in the beginning. He's stronger somehow, more willing to speak out when it's needed, though he doesn't (and never will) view himself as a leader. He wants the best for the mages, even if it means they have to fight tooth and nail for it. He values loyalty, and compassion in others, and in himself.

"A fool is a man who reaches beyond his grasp. A fool is a man that refuses to accept there are limits to his knowledge. I am no fool."

Inventory: His staff, robes
Abilities: (cries, I'm sorry, you guys know how Dragon Age is)

Rhys has a vast array of magical abilities under his belt, ranging from the complex to the simple, from offensive to defensive, and even to healing. He is a truly capable mage, and when under extreme pressure, or emotional turmoil, he's even capable of tapping into greater power, but that all has limits. A mage can only cast a finite number of spells until they need to recharge, and the more powerful spells cost more energy, or mana.

In regards to ability limitations, Rhys will take a longer time to cast a spell (eg: arcane bolt, a blast of magical energy, can take only a second to cast in his world, while it will take several in this one), each spell will require larger chunks of energy to be expended, and all his abilities will be less effective. The only thing to be unaffected will be his staff, as the staves in the Dragon Age series require no mana to use, and each have their own elemental attacks (ice, fire, or electricity).

Now, due to the fact that Rhys is a book character, we don't get a spell chart for him, but we do receive multiple descriptions of his attacks, and abilities. As stated previously, his spells are fairly varied, but there's evidence that he shares many abilities with a Force Mage, and, obviously, a Spirit Healer. For instance, his gravity ability that he uses in Adamant seems to be a more powerful version of Gravitic Ring of the Force Mage abilities, with an inclusion of a void that sucks the enemies into an abyss.

LIGHT | Rhys, with the use of the crystal on his staff, is capable of conjuring light. It's a soft white glow, and useful in the dark.

SPIRIT MEDIUM/HEALER | Like his mother, Rhys is a spirit healer. He's capable of communicating, and using spirits to heal others beyond a mage's natural abilities. This requires a certain nobility, normally, and compassion as this isn't a specialization just any mage can get. It's also a fairly dangerous specialization as any Spirit Healer or Medium can be lulled into a false sense of security, and possessed by a demon masquerading as a spirit. This makes Rhys vigilant, and unlikely to use his abilities willy nilly.

The majority of the spells within this specialization are primarily healing, but Rhys is also capable of summoning Wisps, benign spirits without much consciousness that are simply happy to come into the world, and using them harmlessly (like leading Templars around, or creating a ruckus elsewhere). With Wisps, he can also gather information from them, and see what they saw while out and about.

BARRIER | Rhys, like many mages, is capable of summoning barriers to block ways, or protect himself or others. His barriers are powerful, shimmering waves of light, capable of even withstanding Templars in extreme situations.

MIND BLAST | A wave of pure energy that knocks back enemies, giving him space. The ability can be fairly powerful if he taps into his resources, but, for the most part, it's just enough to give him a foot or two of space.

ARCANE BOLT | The most common of a mage's attacks, and the one that consumes little mana, and takes little time to recharge.

GRAVITY/GRAVITIC RING | A black ball of energy that quickly turns into a sucking void with a dark blue corona. It sucks the enemies nearest to its center in, like a black hole, while all other enemies nearby are slowed; the closer they are, the slower they become.

This list is just a small taste of Rhys is capable of, with these just being the primary abilities shown in the book. This is by no means comprehensive, as mages tend to have more than just a handful of spells at their disposal. Any spells he uses in game that aren't among this list will primarily be headcanon, drawn from the games and particular mage specializations (Force Mage, Spirit Healer, ETC), but I will never just randomly pick a spell he wouldn't be logically capable of using (he won't be casting Firestorm, or using Dalish Keeper spells).

When it comes to weaknesses, Rhys is physically weaker than a warrior or rogue--think average human. He is a mage after all, and they don't handle close quarters combat particularly well, especially since they don't wear armor. That doesn't mean he won't attempt physical combat should it become necessary, but it's not something he's well versed in, or good at. At all.

He takes an injury like anyone else, but the worse the injury, the less likely he'll be able to use his magic. But strong emotional turmoil, and the need to protect another can give him enough of a boost to summon energy from deep within to fight back.

Flaws: Rhys is known to involve himself in or start chaotic events if only because he's an advocate for change and believes change is something one has to start, sometimes by shaking things up (often by shaking things up). Like most humans, he has his emotional issues and a temper he can lose, overall, though, he's pretty chill and doesn't really want chaos.

SAMPLES
Action Log Sample: Look at that TDM theading, ooh, yeah, so saucy.

comments

Upon the loss of both Evangeline and Cole, Rhys was devastated; Cole's acceptance of what he was, and fading away sapped what little willpower Rhys had had left, and Evangeline's death broke his heart as he realized just how much he cared for her. Those losses left him utterly hopeless, as if he'd lost pieces of himself. It's Wynne's death that ultimately changes his whole view on how he felt about; for most of the book, he felt as if she was trying to use him like Adrian, that she wasn't the same woman she'd been when they'd first met, but her death, that compassion and love, showed him that that woman was still there.

✖ Character Powers & Skills: [COMPLETE LIST OF SPELLS FOR CDC NEEDED] Rhys has a vast array of magical abilities under his belt, ranging from the complex to the simple, from offensive to defensive, and even to healing. He is a truly capable mage, and when under extreme pressure, or emotional turmoil, he's even capable of tapping into greater power, but that all has limits. A mage can only cast a finite number of spells until they need to recharge, and the more powerful spells cost more energy, or mana.

Due to the fact that Rhys is a book character, we don't get a spell chart for him, but we do receive multiple descriptions of his attacks, and abilities.

With Wisps, he can also gather information from them, and see what they saw while out and about, but it should be noted that knowledge gathered from a Wisp is fuzzy, and occasionally confusing.

It will only stumble enemies now, and knock weaker enemies or humans off their feet momentarily.

FIRE | It's fairly self-explanatory. He can set fire to things should he need to. This particular ability has not been developed much by Rhys

CHARACTER SAMPLES.
✖ First Person POV: Link us to a voicetest post or thread! Make sure that you're linking threads that abide by our AC requirements. If you're worried your threads are too short, then you'll likely get asked to do a video log revision - so linking more threads is always the safer bet.

✖ Third Person POV: "This goes beyond mages, and templars. This is your world at stake."

CHARACTER ITEMS.
✖ Pick a Team: (BLUE, Maybe--Could easy focus on medical, would hate to be forced into a leadership position), (RED, would hate it even more, but would be a fully capable mage in the team)
✖ Reason for Joining the CDC: [As a way to protect spirits? help Cole? idk? stop the war? bring his mom back--nah, he'd be like fuck that's bad juju friend]
✖ Mission Freebie: What or who is your character's end mission request?
✖ Personal Item or Weapon: His Staff, deals electricity based damage. For Rhys, just the chance to leave the White Spire for more than a moment was a chance he wouldn't turn down, even if all he did was fetch food or salt chews. He stayed for several months, enduring hostility from the natives due to his Orlesian accent that eventually led to being beaten by three older boys. In retaliation, Rhys lashed out, scorching one of the boys faces badly, but received worse from them. He would have died if guards hadn't intervened, but the incident ended his apprenticeship under Arvin, and he was returned to the White Spire.

Sometime between his arrival to the White Spire as a child, and his apprenticeship, he met Adrian, a spunky mage who he hit it off with. In his adulthood, or even his teenage years, he formed a physical relationship with her, but it ended after he refused to become the leader she saw in him; they remained best friends, however, eventually joining the Libertarian fraternity after becoming enchanters together.

He eventually specializes as a Spirit Healer, and in 9:33 Dragon, thirteen years after passing his Harrowing, Rhys is nominated and becomes a Senior Enchanter of the Circle with the sponsorship of his former master, Enchanter Arvin.

Sometime after the Fifth Blight, Rhys met his mother, Wynne, and though she promised to return to him, she never did. It led him to holding a certain sense of bitterness towards her. That bitterness only grew after Wynne convinces the Collage of Enchanters to not disband the Circle in 9:37 Dragon.

In 9:39 Dragon, Rhys ended up encountering an invisible mage (or so he thought), a young man by the name of Cole whom he forms an unsteady friendship with. During that time, various mages began to disappear, or turned up murdered. Rhys didn't suspect Cole, not until Lord Seeker Lambert's arrival at the White Spire in 9:40 Dragon. His suspicion led him to confronting the young man, getting into a fight with him that ended up with him in a cell for several days.

He's released shortly after, primarily due to Wynne's request that he travel with her to the Western Approach on a mission for the Divine. Evangeline, the Knight-Captain of the White Spire, and Adrian, his best friend, accompany both him and Wynne. Along the journey, Rhys noticed that Cole was following behind, and after briefly seeking the young man out while the others slept, he learned that the Lord Seeker had told Evangeline that should they discover something that could endanger the circle, she should take care of it.

Directly after a short confrontation with Evangeline, Rhys informed both Wynne and Adrian of Cole's presence. Wynne suggested that Cole isn't all he appears, more than likely that the young man is a spirit, or a man possessed.

Upon their arrival at Adamant, the group discovered that the whole tower was filled with the possessed, leading to a battle in a confined space in the lower floors. After they dispatched the demons, they found Pharamond, the very reason for their mission, possessed. To deal with the demon, Wynne intended to travel to the Fade alone, but things go awry, and they end up in there, along with Cole who had been keeping his distance.

Instead of hunting for Pharamond in the Fade, Rhys insisted that he look for Cole, and Evangeline goes with. They encounter him in his own personal nightmare, and after defeating the demon that haunted him, and learning of Cole's personal tragedy, they're returned from the Fade due to Wynne defeating the demon that had possessed Pharamond.

Upon return, the group learned that Pharamond had reversed the Rite of Tranquility, turning him from Tranquil to an emotional mess. After a lengthy discussion of Pharamond's actions, and a near fight between Adrian and Evangeline (which Rhys broke up), they decide he should face judgement in Val Royeaux.

Due to the fact that the group saw Cole in the Fade, it appeared his invisibility curse was broken. The group could see him, and after Rhys and Evangeline convince him to return to the White Spire, the group set off. During their return, Evangline offered to let Rhys run away with Cole. Although tempting, knowing their possible fate, he denied. During this, Rhys and Evangeline develop feelings for one another.

Once returned to Val Royeaux, after a meeting with the Divine and emotional confrontations, the Divine agrees to let the First Enchanters meet to discuss the current state of the Circle of Magi and the Rite of Tranquility. Grand Enchanter Fiona, however, had others plans and immediately calls a vote for separation, with Wynne and Rhys both attempting to convince them otherwise.

The meeting ends up disrupted as Pharamond had been found dead, and the murder weapon found in Rhys' chambers. Their refusal to hand Rhys over, and end the conclave led to a battle, First Enchanters (along with Adrian, Wynne, and Rhys) against the Templars and Seekers. The mages were cut down, and as the Templars closed in, Rhys made a decision: he'd stay behind and let Wynne and Evangeline escape.

Lord Seeker Lambert easily overpowered Rhys, capturing and imprisoning him after he suffered severe injuries at both his hands, and his subordinates. During his time imprisoned, he's interrogated by the Lord Seeker, who attempts to convince Rhys that Cole is a demon, and even goes as far as to use Rhys' own written books against him. He also attempts to press Rhys into confessing, lest he kill all the mages in the cells.

Later, with Leliana, Cole rescued Rhys and the rest of the mages locked up. Unable to walk on his own, Cole had to assist him, leaving them vulnerable to chasing templars. Eventually, they made it to the sewers, almost home free, but Lord Seeker Lambert easily located them with the use of Rhys' phylactery. With the use of the Litany of Adralla, a tome only capable of being used against spirits and demons, Lambert cut off Cole's ability to keep them invisible. Lambert beat Cole, mocking him until Cole simply accepts what he is despite Rhys' attempts to physically and verbally defend him. Cole disappeared, as if he'd never existed, but Evangeline arrived just in time to battle Lambert on her own.

The battle didn't last long, and Lambert managed to mortally wound Evangeline before he takes off as a group of mages give chase. Rhys attempted desperately to bring her back, using whatever willpower he had inside of him to heal her, and sobbed over her dead body. Wynne, in one final gesture to her son, gave up the spirit that had kept her alive for so long to return Evangeline to life, and gave a smile as a final goodbye to him.

The mages end up traveling to Andoral's Reach, a fallen fortress on the outskirts of Orlais. There Adrian comes to him, and he learns that it was her that murdered Pharamond and placed the blade in his room as a way to force Wynne into action. In his anger, he threatens to shove her over the tower, but refrains, explaining to her that they were no longer friends.

After, he attends a new conclave, with the mages that had made it to the fortress. As the representative of the Aequitarians, taking his mother's place, Rhys casts the final vote, the fate of the Circle of Magi in his hands. He votes to fight.

It's only hours later that he attends his mother's funeral, saying his own final goodbye with Evangeline by his side.

Personality:

"You're a compassionate man, Enchanter.

It's Wynne's death that ultimately changes his whole view on how he felt about; for most of the book, he felt as if she was trying to use him like Adrian, that she wasn't the same woman she'd been when they'd first met, but her death, that compassion and love, showed him that that woman was still there.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:

It will only stumble enemies now, and knock weaker enemies or humans off their feet momentarily.

ARCANE BOLT | The most common of a mage's attacks, and the one that consumes little mana, and takes little time to recharge. Even in Ataraxion, Rhys will be able to use it more often than any of his other spells.

Emotionally, his weaknesses come from his temper, and the need to protect the people he cares about. He's quick to defend them, and quicker still to try and protect them. This can leave him open for attack, injury, or worse. And, as noted in his personality section, his temper can get him into some trouble, including getting him locked up. And he has a bit of a habit of wandering off at the most inopportune times, often getting into some form of trouble.

Inventory: • The red robes of a Senior Enchanter, with a top fur cloak that ends above his elbows.
• His staff, deals electricity based damage.
• Cole's Dagger

Appearance: Rhys is noted to be fairly handsome, even called too handsome by Adrian, and while it's something he has no issue acknowledging, he doesn't appear to be too vain. He has black hair, and a dark beard with grey just beginning to show up—something he believes makes him appear distinguished. He isn't particularly thin, or frail, and for all his years in a circle tower, he does have hints of muscular build here and there. His warm, brown eyes lend a friendliness to his features that could appear cold otherwise, as stated by Evangeline.

Due to the fact that Rhys is a book character, his PB will be James Purefoy, primarily from his role in Ironclad and Camelot.
Age: 40

AU Clarification:

S A M P L E S
Log Sample:

The novices swung their staves in time with the Enchanter's shouts, flickering balls of flame, and ice connecting with makeshift target dummies. The spells weren't particularly strong, but they weren't meant to be. They were all children, the majority a little over thirteen, but they were preparing for battle, for war. A few of the other enchanters had protested the idea, claiming that it would spread fear, and that there were enough enchanters to protect them, but Rhys called it practical: a necessary precaution.

A large force of the Templar Order had already begun to march, he'd told them, calm, but with a sharp edge to his voice. Adrian had jumped to back him, as if the the idea had been her own. From there, even with dissent, it hadn't taken much for the older enchanters to begrudgingly agree; no one liked it, but they all understood the necessity.

It was war, whether they had wanted it or not.

He swallowed back bitterness tight in his throat, eyes turning back towards the apprentices. They listened well, paid attention more than they'd ever had in any of their classes. Even the tricksters, the lazy, and foolish appeared alert, brought on by the bleakness and chill that seemed to infect the fortress. No one had to inform them of what was going to happen. Everyone knew, but few spoke of it loudly.

There were whispers of discontent amongst a few of the other fraternities, and Rhys knew that several enchanters were no doubt considering running, and taking their chances out in the world. They wouldn't get far, though. As it were, they were all apostates, but soon some of their circle would turn to blood magic in desperation—a desperation he understood all too well.

The fear, and desperation would only breed more fear. Rhys could see it like a cycle, one that would never end as long as they continued like this.

He wondered how this all would have been if things had gone differently: if Adrian hadn't planted that knife, if he'd never traveled with Wynne—never got to know his mother. His heart clenched painfully, and, in turn, he tightened his fingers around his staff.

That darkness, those fears and could-have-beens, would be his downfall, at least if not for Evangeline. He turned to look at her, watching from the distance, her face a mask of concentration and determination. The only Templar in a fortress of mages, and a symbol that change could come. The future ahead of them would be hard, painful, and perhaps it wouldn't last very long at all, but it was worth it.

She saw him, and smiled, and his fears didn't melt away into nothing, but they somehow seemed more manageable. Rhys knew he would take on the world for her, fight until there was nothing left, as long as she was by his side.

The world wasn't going to change for him alone, but together? It's hard to tell his age, but there's gray beginning to mark his dark hair and beard, and the start of thing laugh lines around his eyes. When he speaks, his accent is clear, almost French, but it's not thick, or heavy. ]

I'm Rhys, a healer, and I understand that things aren't always so easy here. [ if this ship is at all like what many have said, it's so much worse than not easy. ] I'd like to be able to assist, but I'm a bit uncertain on the best way to go about that. This is all bit more... [ he gestures lazily for emphasis ] complicated than I'm used to.

If any could point me in the proper direction, I'd appreciate it. [ He offers an easy, charming grin before the video goes black, and comes to an abrupt end. Players applying from canons without available wiki pages are required to write their character's history out.

✖ Character Personality: This section should give us a solid view of who your character is and what they're like. As with the setting, this section may be as long or as short as you want to make it.

✖ Character Powers & Skills: List your character's powers and skill sets in this section and please make the distinction clear (ie. which are powers and which are skill sets). The CDC will have the powers listed here on file so this section MUST be as complete as possible. Your character WILL NOT be allowed to have a power that isn't listed here.

✖ Third Person POV: Write us, in prose or brackets, how your character is recruited by the CDC. If your application is accepted, this section of your app will become part of your character's game canon.

CHARACTER ITEMS.
✖ Pick a Team: Pick two (2) teams for your character, as well as a short reasoning for why they would fit in either team.

✖ Reason for Joining the CDC: Please summarize the reason for your character's decision to join the CDC. Why are they saying yes? We want to know why you think your character would be a good fit for the game, as well as what kinds of reactions they will have to the CDC and the mission that they’ve been entrusted with.
✖ Mission Freebie: What or who is your character's end mission request?
✖ Personal Item or Weapon: All characters are allowed one (1) personal item or weapon of their choice from their homeworld.

✖ Character Inventory:
Inventory goes here. Please indicate which items are confiscated upon arrival.

comments
